Description
A useful wallet with four compartments including a central zipped pocket for coins and a press stud fastening. Handmade in India from recycled polythene bags, the walet has a waterproof wipe clean layer making it durable and hard wearing. The lining is made from nylon.
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) plastic bags are collected and made into a range of bags and accessories by Conserve, a non-profit making organisation, in India. This generates income for the less advantaged communities, urban poor, in Delhi.
Urban waste provides a potential for an income stream for the rag-picking community. Conserve has trained these groups in collecting, sorting and grading of plastic that is then used to make bags, wallets, footwear and accessories.
"I am doing something thats useful. Polythene bags clog our drains. Cows eat them and get choked. By making them into bags, they get used, and unemployed people get jobs". Gita Pande, one of the Conserve workers. Some women snip at the handles of the bags to make them into sheets; others wash them in water and detergent and hang them on a clothes line. These are then moulded together into single sheets of thick, durable plastic, and stitched into bright, colourful handbags.
